This is a longtime favorite of mine and while admittedly not a favorite of the person who wrote it… This was really my inspiration for writing the clergy as the villains in Divinity.

When to listen: It’s general playlist for me, but if you’re looking for specific plot points, it could help out there too. I love the changeup at 3:42 where Oliver Hartman from At Vance takes on the role of the Pope… awesome awesome!

One of Within Temptation’s biggest hits. Definitely among their most recognizable songs, and one that gets stuck in your head very quickly. I love Sharon’s voice. It’s very distinct when compared to others in the same genre.

When to listen: This should be fairly obvious. The title of the song is Solemn Hour. This is a song to listen to when it appears that the bad guys have won. Your heroes are on the run and/or on the brink of defeat. They are at their most desperate hour and only a miracle will save them. The time building up to the climax is where this belongs.

Sort of the Meatloaf of metal… His songs are a lot better than his English in many cases ‘My Young is Over Now’? Ugh… Who wrote that?

Anyway most of his music is pretty good. This song is a real pulse pounder.

When to listen: Writing fatigue. This song is kind of an upper. It’s full of energy and even the band looks like they’re having a good time.

Ah Dragonforce. Always a good epic story to tell in their songs. This one in particular is a pretty good action-based speed song!

When to listen: When your characters are readying for the climactic clash, whatever it may be. This song and its music helps you picture the moments before two armies charge into battle against each other, two warriors stand opposed, or even one person standing against his own demons.

Okay… I’m going to start off by saying that I am not a fan of Victorian Era stories, especially from Europe. This was a time of high poverty, suffering, and the rather horrific beginnings of modern medicine. One could argue that maybe it was worse in previous times, but there are more graphic accounts from this time period and frankly, it always seems like history or the people who write it try to gloss over that.

Anyway, the video takes place in that time period. The visuals for the most part aren’t bad. I’m a huge fan of the two female guest vocals, and honestly I saw this band live about a year ago when they toured the US with Dragonforce… and it remains one of the best shows I ever saw…

Oh hell yeah!

When to Listen: Kamelot is one of those bands that likes to tell stories with their songs. So this is definitely a character development song. Keep it in mind when creating characters… be they angelic or demonic in nature.

Yeah new Battle Beast!!! I seriously can’t stop listening to this one.

When to Listen: Brainstorming. Seriously, you’d be surprised what you can come up with when someone asks you a philosophical question with no right answer:

‘Is familiar Hell better than unknown Heaven?’

‘Listen to me
What if
We only believe That we can choose our reality
What if The truth we know is just a profitable fantasy
If we view the world with closed eyes

And only look after ourselves
It’s easy to swallow all the juicy lies
But who the fuck is gonna clean up the mess
So I ask you one more time

Is familiar hell
Better than unknown heaven?’

Powerful, thought-provoking words indeed!

A recent addition to my playlist, but this band has quickly grown on me! I love the lyrics, the chorus, the harmony… this is what metal was meant to be!
“Through the space-time continuum we must ride
Let the winds of the universe be our guide
Take my hand, and hold on for the ride of your life
And what wonders we’ll see on the ocean of time”

God that’s bad ass!!

When to Listen: Based on the chorus alone, this is when the journey of our heroes picks up and heads for the climax. That’s really the best time for something like this.
