Fire Emblem: The Nowi Controversy

Oh God… he’s talking about Fire Emblem again!

Yes I am!

So ever since Fire Emblem Awakening came out, there has been some controversy over the characters. Though I tend to ignore these as there seems to be a controversy every time a FE comes out, I wanted to weigh in on this one…

For those of us who’ve played Awakening… we all know who Nowi is.

Nono_confession

Yup she’s the spunky dragon girl that people either really love… or really hate for some reason. Her stats are a little low and she is a pain in the ASS to level up, I will give you that, but her offspring is one of the most powerful Manaketes you can get, and the manakete class is powerful in and of itself.

Anyway, she drummed up some controversy a while back… which I still see debated on the forums every now and then because she can achieve an S-Class ranking with another character, aka marriage. The problem is that she looks like a 12… maybe 13 (AT BEST!) year old.

I’ll be honest, in my game, I usually pair her up with Gregor. In my opinion it’s the best story if you go that route.

Now some have said that this is promoting pedophilia because of how young Nowi is. The problem is that Nowi isn’t a 12 year old human being, by human standards in the game, she’s well over 1,000 years old, and while she has a rather energetic attitude, she does show a level of maturity that reflects that.

Gregor… I actually don’t know how old he is. However, near as I can tell, most of the Fire Emblem characters are between 16 and 45. Gregor strikes me as being on the older side, so maybe pushing 40?

Technically you could argue that Nowi is the one crib-robbing here, but that doesn’t make sense either.

A lot of people have said that it’s not the actual age that’s important (okay…) it’s that she looks like a 12 year old and that promotes pedophilia. To that argument, I cry foul. There are medically recognized conditions, albeit rare, where someone doesn’t age. In other cases, some more petite people just look younger as well. Heck I attended college with a girl who to this day looks like she’s 13. So what, do those people not deserve to be in love, have a relationship and a family? Will they have large societal hurdles to overcome? Unfortunately, yes… but that should not stop them.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not making a case for pedophilia or promoting it. I personally think that it’s a serious mental illness that is in dire need of proper treatment.
This isn’t a case of that at all. Nowi isn’t a human being, she’s a different species all together with different maturity and aging rates.

One could make the argument that by her own species’ standards, she’s just a child, but that would require us to know how they age, their culture and biological maturity… people, it’s a fantasy story. We’re not getting that deep into this! I know some people like to, but personally unless it’s somehow necessary to the plot, I’d rather spare the gory details.

In the end, I don’t believe that Nowi’s appearances poses any real problems. To the anti-child endangerment crowd, I’m with you guys 100% that no child should ever be hurt or abused, but you’re focusing on the wrong target here. The god-awful show ‘Stage Moms of LA’ would be a better place to direct your rage.

But maybe I’m wrong, maybe there’s something I’m missing here. Let’s open this up to discussion! Leave me a comment, I’d be happy to discuss this with you!

Fire Emblem: Tharja vs. Rhajat

Hello all!!

I know it’s been a while and yes, Raiya is coming along nicely. I’m hoping to get back to once-a-week pieces for now and become far more prolific again once Raiya is complete.

So this will be the first piece…

Tharja vs. Rhajat…

Let’s take a look at these two, shall we?

ae6

Hey WTF!!!??? They’re just recycled characters! Same voices, same personalities, everything!

Okay… a little background; Tharja was a big fan favorite from Fire Emblem: Awakening. Most people said that she was likely the most lore-friendly person for the Avatar to marry because… Because insane darkness and a rather alarming obsession equals marriage material? To everyone who condemned their avatar to a life with her, don’t believe the suicide note when he’s found carved up in the ice box!

Yeesh…

Okay, look honestly she’s an entertaining character in her own right. She’s dark, gloomy, and pretty much what you would expect from someone who dabbles in the dark arts. So I can understand why she is so popular.

Then Fire Emblem Fates comes out… I highly recommend reading my review of the game. It was definitely one of the more interesting offerings from the Fire Emblem series.

As the game progresses, we start noticing some characters showing up that look suspiciously like characters from Awakening. Some are the guardians of the Noble Families while others are children born of the party. One character suspiciously stands out from the rest; Hayato’s daughter, Rhajat. I usually pair Hayato with Orochi one because its lore-friendly, and two because Rhajat gets a nice MAG modifier without taking much in the way of hits to her stats.

So let’ s address the elephant in the room… Yes, Rhajat is a recycled Tharja almost entirely. Heck, the name ‘Rhajat’ is simply Tharja with the ‘T’ and ‘r’ moved. She has the same voice actress, same overly obsessed personality with the avatar, same dark abilities and ideas, same love of curses… etc.

Understandably the reaction to this has ranged from ‘meh’ to ‘Rhajat sucks! She’s nowhere near as good as Tharja.’ It honestly does seem a little lazy, even if it is an homage to the previous game.

The being said, does Rhajat deserve all the scorn she’s been getting? Let’s look at the two characters.

tumblr_oeqfcrDZ0y1vdzylpo1_400.png

Tharja joins you in the ‘Mad King’ questline because… apparently she’s got nothing better to do and doesn’t like who she’s fighting for. There’s no real reason to it other than the fact that the Shepherds are willing to blindly trust her. After she joins the party, she quickly becomes obsessed with the avatar and proceeds to begin stalking him. She even refers to him as ‘my love’. Much to the annoyance and discomfort of the avatar, who proceeds to fake an illness to get away from her.

There are at least two more dialogues with Tharja, both of which are extremely uncomfortable. They include the avatar trying to get Tharja to stop acting weird and it completely backfiring on him. She begins trying to act ‘proper’ and ‘like a normal girl.’ She does eventually save him from a fever where he collapses… though I’m not convinced it wasn’t the result of a curse.

If you do go all the way to S class, she threatens to murder you in your sleep if you back out. Needless to say, I usually  marry her off to Libra. It’s far more entertaining.

She doesn’t really treat her daughter better either. The girl seems extremely timid most of the time, and schizophrenic the rest. She was apparently too wrapped up in her work to teach her daughter anything and only used her for experiments. Not exactly the most likable person. So why is she so popular?

tumblr_oeqfcrDZ0y1vdzylpo1_400

Okay, no! No no no no no no! We’re not going down that road again! It made a helluva lot more sense with Camillia. Tharja maybe be skimpily dressed, but this is not the main reason she’s popular. Give geeks a little more credit.

The truth is that she’s actually very powerful, and her dark persona is something that many geeks can honestly relate to. A lot of people find the way she talks and character reactions entertaining, which is why she’s gained a following.

So what about Rhajat?

Oh God, she’s pretty much the same character, but a cheap imitation? Christ… this is going to be bad… let’s go through her character, shall we?

tumblr_oeqfcrDZ0y1vdzylpo1_400

Rhajat joins your party in Birthright and Revelations if you pair her father, Hayato with someone. Her hair color follows the mother. So for me, it’s usually purple. Following rescuing her in her paralogue, she joins the avatar’s army… and yes, you guessed it, she’s inexplicably obsessed with him. Inexplicably… at least at first.

She reveals that she’s watching over the avatar and, in a sense, protecting him because he saved her. The avatar replies that she would have done the same for him, assuming that her rescue in the paralogue is what she’s referring to. To this, she seems oddly disappointed. She hints towards their fates being intertwined and then leaves.

In her next dialogue, she reveals the real reason why she’s so obsessed with the avatar… Apparently the paralogue wasn’t the first time he saved her. They’d met before in the deeprealms when she was a little girl and the avatar caught her when she almost ran off a cliff… wait… we actually get a VALID explanation??? What the hell is this? It’s not just random obsession or anything like that. Rhajat actually has a decent and… almost justified reasoning for her creepy behavior.

In fact, when the avatar realizes how much of an impact he’s had on her life, he apologizes!

So if you go all the way to S class… Rhajat offers to cease her stalking and leave the avatar alone. She doesn’t want to be a nuisance and though it upsets her, she’s willing to make a break. At that point, she reveals that the avatar has been her hero the entire time for everything he’s done for her.

The avatar is taken aback… and reveals that he actually enjoys her attention to the point where he actually stalked her every now and then. They agree that they have a connection and that they love each other.

It’s not… a perfect match, but it’s as fluid a romance as you can get in Fire Emblem.

Okay… so after putting the two characters together… clearly they are not identical personality-wise. Rhajat’s reasoning is far more fleshed out, and she’s definitely the most dynamic character.

So why then is she the more hated of the two?

Well… in the current trend of story telling, people seem to gravitate more towards antiheroes and complex villains. Tharja can really fit either role. Her psychotic personality and devil may care attitude is definitely something that a lot of fantasy fans can get into.

Rhajat honestly comes off as more of an obsessed fangirl than anything evil that is simply part of an alliance of convenience. The big issue though is more likely the fact that she’s a recycled character, which many people object to because it’s lazy. (Especially when you typically shell out $40 for each title.)

So with all this in mind, which is the superior character?

Well bust out the pitchforks because honestly, it’s Rhajat. She’s more dynamic, less awkward, and honestly her story has a lot more charm to it than Tharja’s. Oh and in case your wondering, yes I do have her marry the Avatar. In fact, she is one of my top choices;

  1. Scarlet (Birthright only)
  2. Rhajat
  3. Elise (See her actions in Birthright to understand why.)
  4. Caeldori
  5. Azura

Anyway, let me know in the comments what you think. Tharja or Rhajat?

Character Portrayal

My previous topic dealing with how I create characters got me thinking. How often have writers seen actors or other personalities and written their characters around them? Or even better, how many of us have ever thought about who we would like to see portray our main characters in a movie or TV show. I know I have… so for those of you who have read my books, I’d like to take a moment to go through who would portray a couple of my characters, namely the primary heroes in each. Let’s take a look, I’ll go in order of when the books were written;

Divinity: Adalyn
A few names came up over time for this character. The following excerps from the book describe her:
“Her bright blue eyes shined with wonder as she looked up the long staircase of ivory and gold to the massive cathedral at the top. “

“Adalyn nodded as she adjusted her beige maiden’s dress and tightened her sash. The soft cotton tightened around her hips as her hands moved to her hair. She parted it in the middle and made sure that the few loose strands were brushed back behind her ear once again. The blonde strands flowed to her neck and shimmered in the sunlight.”

I also have a concept image that I put together for her:

Untitled (3)

So who would play her?
Well… at first I thought Katherine Heigl when she was portraying Izzie on Grey’s Anatomy.

From EPP

However, over time and seeing some of the other roles she plays… given that the role calls for a younger actress, and given some of the other roles I’ve seen her play…
Honestly, I’d cast Chloe Moretz in the role:
izzie

Damnation: General Xaphan/Xaphine Lorenzi:
This one… oh man… this one was tough. VERY tough. This is her description in my book:

“Xaphan wore a tattered black outfit that flowed below her knees. It was all she was allowed to keep after being stripped of her sword and armor. Her pale white skin was filthy and scarred. Her wings were missing feathers and covered in blood, most of which was not her own. Her black hair was a mangled mess from weeks of her being too busy to tend to it. She breathed in deeply as her pale blue eyes looked up scornfully at Michael.”

She is also a very capable commander, though she appears young, she does have a very strong, mature albeit vicious presence about her.

I’ve made NUMEROUS concept images of her over time, trying to capture this:

Now I know what everyone is thinking; ‘Why not just cast the model you had portray her?’
Honestly, she’s a very talented model, but I don’t really know her personally, I don’t know her acting abilities or her mannerisms. It’s not enough to simply look the part, you also have to be able to act the part, and maybe she could… I don’t know.

So who would I cast then?
Tough call. At first I thought Natalia Tena  would do a good job. She’s somewhat soft-spoken, but she knows how to fight… though we never see it really in Harry Potter or Game of Thrones. She also very much looks the part.
However, over time I started shifting away from her. Little by little, I started thinking that maybe she wasn’t the best person to play the role.
So who then? Well… not too long later… I saw this…

Artemesia’s fighting style is very similar to how Xaphan fights, though Xaphan is skilled with several different weapons, not just a pair of daggers. She’s clearly enjoying the battle. The main differences between her and Xaphan are that Xaphan possesses a code of honor, on the battlefield, she can actually overrule Lucifer, and while she enjoys fighting, she views the spilling of her brothers’ and sisters’ blood a terrible waste.

300 Rise of an Empire movie was very lacking on plot and honestly not very good, but admittedly I watch it with some frequency. Why? Because it falls into my ‘Good Villain = Good Movie’ formula. Eva Green steals the movie and is an insane villain, even being a one-dimensional character.

Given how she portrayed Artemesia and given how close that actually is to Xaphan’s personality… and given that Eva Green is one of the few people under 6ft that I find intimidating…

Eva Green would be my choice to play Lucifer’s most trusted General.

izzie.jpg
(That stare just sends chills down my spine.)

Magnifica: Toby Arrigan:
I admit that I never really thought about this one.
Toby shook his head as he fixed his dark brown hair, “Gishan you’re a dwarf, don’t you have a stone somewhere to bang?”

He’s your average every day college student who happened to get thrust into a disastrous situation. He’s an unremarkable, but kind-hearted person, and is someone who would give a friend the shirt off of his back.
Tough call, but I’d actually have to go with Thomas Dekker after seeing his performance in Nightmare on Elm Street and being a fan of the Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Soul Siphon: Mary Jane Kelly:
DSC_2044
This one wasn’t tough. In fact my wife came up with the actor that would portray her best. The only obstacle I faced was that this was a living person at one point. There isn’t much on her in the history books, but we know she worked at a brothel, she young, fairly pretty, but stoutly-built.
izzie.jpg
No one knows her true hair color anymore, that was lost to history. However varying reports based on nicknames and descriptions list that she was either blonde, raven, or red headed. The most popular theory, and one that I happen to agree with is that she was a red head.
So at first, some people brought up her portrayal in From Hell:
izzie.jpg

Ugh… yeah every time I see her, I think Red Sox underwear and brownies, or an unfunny gross out movie with a guy from the 70s. PASS!

My description of Mary Jane is a little different, given the narrative of my story:
“Even after discovering that she was there, she was impossible to see until she moved. The lack of lighting where she stood cloaked every feature except the curvature of her form. She was little more than a black figure, but as she moved, the nearby light shined on her features. She was slender with extremely fair skin and bright red hair that was long enough to reach below her shoulder blades, and was brushed back to stay out of her face. She had very light freckles that seemed to congregate on her cheekbones and nose just below her eyes. Despite her scowl, the edges of her lips were curved in a way that she almost always had a slight smile on her face. When her lips curled, they caused a small fold in the philtrum under her nose. She was strikingly pretty, even with a disgusted look on her face.”

So then my wife mentions a red head from Game of Thrones. At first I’m like… “Yeah, no. Not Sansa Stark, hell no!”
She then corrects me, saying that there’s another red head featured prominently in the show:
izzie

Right age, hair color, right appearance, and given her performance in GOT, right attitude. Rose Leslie would be the person I’d cast without reservation. So good call to my wife on that one.

Soul Siphon Corban McConnel:
soul siphon preview

I admit that I actually put some thought into this one. He’s strong yet somewhat fragile. He’s not physically tough by any stretch of the imagination and I wouldn’t say he’s a strong, stand-out, lead. The left me with one choice… Nicholas Hoult. His portayals in X-Men and Fury Road make him a good candidate.

In summation;
Chloe Moretz as Adalyn
Eva Green as General Xaphan
Thomas Dekker as Toby Arrigan
Rose Leslie
as Mary Jane Kelly
Nicholas Hoult
 as Corban McConnell

So readers, what do you think? For those who have read my stories, who would you cast? Let me know!

Writing Strong Women

Hi Jim,

I’ve read a couple of your books and have a question for you… I’ve noticed in your books that you write some pretty tough girls! It seems like you put more effort into the heroines than the heroes. I was wondering if you were a feminist?

Thanks,
Kelly

Ugh… you know I try to avoid taking sides or being labelled one way or another. In too many situations, more often than not a label becomes a negative thing.

That said, I love my readers and I make it a point to answer as many questions as I can when they come in.

So Kelly… to answer your question… I honestly believe in the IDEALS that feminism was originally based on. Would I count myself among the current flock? No.

If you were to force me to choose something to liken myself to… I’d have to go with humanist. I believe in personal responsibility. I believe in men and women, of all walks of life, races, and sexual orientations working together for the betterment of all. You can write strong women without subscribing to any social justice newsletter, all you have to really do is look at reality.

Isn’t all that what feminism is all about?

I believe it used to be. However these days, not so much. What may have once been a righteous ideology, has become something much different. These days, a lot of these social groups have turned from trying to work to make their own groups equal with everyone else for the betterment of all, to basically grabbing for everything they can get and to hell with everyone else, as long as we come out on top.
2nd and 3rd wave feminists scare the hell out of me. Between people going after Meryl Streep for not identifying as a feminist, to people slamming those on the internet when they say that they don’t want to see a movie… ‘well he may not have said it’s because it stars women, but let’s say that anyway because that’s probably what he’s thinking,’ to calling people’s bosses and demanding they be fired for exercising their Freedom of Speech in public, blocking people online who try to have a meaningful conversation, and worst of all, calling for the mass genocide of the group they see as the oppressors… and then the bigger movements not condemning their behavior at all…

So basically it’s become an all-out war, and not just trampling freedom of expression and freedom of speech, but also become the thought police as well. In other words, you may not have said you’re sexist, racist, etc. but if they can make the case that maybe that’s what you were thinking? You’re in the same boat. That is EXTREMELY dangerous territory to get into. It is also why I try to avoid politics in my posts. I really don’t need the headache.

And honestly, it’s not just feminism, there are several other groups out there that are the same way. Groups talking about race, sexual identity, and other gender-related issues. Here’s the problem, most people incorrectly label them social justice warriors. I don’t agree with that because it’s a play on words which isn’t accurate. I prefer to refer to them as regressive or the ‘anti-personal-responsibility crowd.’ That, to me, is more accurate. The groups do not stand for equality or personal responsibility. They stand for self-promotion and, in many cases, revenge for past wrongs. Let me give you a few examples:

Michael Brown, a martyr of the #BlackLivesMatter social justice group.
– Robbed a convenient store.
-Did not cooperate when ID’d by the police.
-Attacked the office.
What narrative was pushed by the crowd? Fiction about him surrendering and putting his hands up, and that it was the fault of the racist white police that he wound up dead.
No personal responsibility.

3rd Wave feminists, notably Anita Sarkeesian, constantly bash the portrayal of women in various forms of media, including video games, while not really possessing any insight into the medium they are bashing (Anita is by her own admission, not a gamer). However try to mention the portrayal of men… you know, the physically impossible muscle mass? You’ll either be completely disregarded or given some sort of completely un-intellectual justification for their hypocritical view.
mmdocdc

These groups have become the very evil that they claim to fight against. Between segregated black housing… actually being CHAMPIONED by the African American Social Justice Crowd, feminists attacking a successful woman who has been a role model to many for NOT identifying as a feminist, and a million other incidents I could go on all day with, it’s becoming difficult to imagine what equal rights movements of the past would say to… Those who seem themselves as their modern counterparts. They want you to believe that you’re weak and can’t stand on your own two feet, so you NEED them… because otherwise they have no real reason to exist.

Now I’m not saying that racism, sexism, and prejudice don’t exist, they do, and they need to be dealt with accordingly as they come up. However, responding to prejudice and hate with prejudice and hate… or concocting issues where none truly exist in order to bolster your standings under the guise of raising awareness, is NOT the way to go about it and it never has been.

Okay… follow all that? I’m sure I’m going to get some angry emails for it, but oh well. I’m not a feminist, or anything like that. The closest I could be likened to is a humanist. We’re all equal. We all bring special abilities, traits, and personalities to the table. Yes, some of us come from more humble backgrounds and have to work harder to get ahead, but take a look at most of the more ‘privileged’ people. If you take a look at their family history, all too often you can find someone who came from humble beginnings and either had a great idea, or busted their butts to get ahead. At some point, everyone started out in ashes and rose to where they are. Personal Responsibility. Don’t like your current standings? Work hard, take a step back, develop a game plan, change your settings, and start down the path to a better life. Will it be easy? No, but it’s not impossible.

Anyway, rant over. I’m not a feminist or anything else with an ‘ist’ at the end of it. I believe in the equal value of all walks of life. I’ll say no more on the subject.

Please, please, please, Rey Skywalker!!!

So after due consideration, I am flip-flopping faster than John Kerry! I no longer hope that Rey is a Palpatine. I am praying big time that she is the Skywalker we all think she is. Why?

Well it may be obvious, but it’s what really should be. The prime Star Wars stories all surround the Skywalkers, all the evidence points to her being a Skywalker… but beyond that, my reasons are very simple:
THE POTENTIAL CANONIZATION OF TWO OF MY FAVORITE JEDI:

Jedi 1: Mara Jade Skywalker12985391_1107081022688440_7056443068501184153_n

Why I want her to exist: Um… because she’s badass? Former Emperor’s hand, aggressive, noble, and just a really beloved character in the Star Wars Universe. The best books in the entire series involved her. She was a sort of counterbalance to Luke and it worked really well.

Why she can’t exist if Rey isn’t a Skywalker: Well… I suppose that there’s no rule against it. Though I get the feeling that if she’s not a Skywalker, that means that Disney decided to keep with the ‘tradition’ that Jedi do not marry… and Luke is to be the last of the Skywalkers.

Any Downside?
Aside from some serious recon? Well…skywalker-kenobi-or-solo-who-is-rey-s-father-luke-at-what-appears-to-be-a-tomb-stone-780920

Yeah pretty much. If she is to be canonized, it will most likely be well after  her death. Meaning that she’ll only appear in flashbacks… if we’re lucky.

Jedi 2: Celeste Morne
Able-Celeste-Karness

Why?
… Do I even need to answer that? She is my favorite Jedi in the series. She’s incredibly badass, she has the power to transform the entire crew of a Star Destroyer into horrible monsters and she has a martyr complex. She sacrificed herself to a life of isolation in order to keep one of the most dangerous Sith lords ever imprisoned in her own mind. She existed this way for thousands of years, teetering between the light and the dark, completely alone in her struggles.

Why she can’t exist if Rey isn’t a Skywalker: The door to the KOTOR universe being canonized has already been opened with the confirmed existence of Malachor. So the potential is already there. However, in more modern times… no Rey Skywalker means no future Skywalkers… which means no Cade Skywalker. Without Cade, her story can’t come to a conclusion.

Any thoughts? Anyone else we’d like to see canonized? Let me know!

Character Interview: Mary Jane Kelly

Hello all and welcome, once again, to ‘Character Interview.’ Today, we’ve got a very special… guest… actually the studio kind of forced this one on me. I guess that I should be thankful that the security at the door relieved her of all of her weapons. At least I hope they did… Anyway, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Jane Kelly.

Mary: Wait… what’s going on here? I thought I was going on a mission and the next thing I know, I’m frisked at the door and get all my blades taken away by a pair of burley fellows with extremely grabby hands! -Look boys, next one of you who tries to touch me will lose a hand, and it will be a lot more messy without my blades!

: Okay… well… Thank you for coming Mary, you’re here today to do an interview. I thought you were made aware of that backstage?

Mary: An… interview for what?

: For ‘Character Interviews’ we do this every once in a while to give your potential readers an idea of what to expect.

Mary: MY potential readers? What the f*** you are you talking about?

: Perhaps we can talk about that after the interview?

Mary: No, we’ll talk about it now!

: Okay, Mary, you’re a character in a story. Your story was recently published and we’re trying to get the word out about this. With your help, we can get your story told. If not… well then you may remain in the pages of a book.

Mary: Right… um… okay… been hitting the pub a little too much lately, have we?

: It’s up to you.

Mary: (Sigh) All right, fine… what the hell. I’ve already been felt up by your boys at the door. Might as well get some attention out of it. Just don’t expect me to get too personal.

:Wouldn’t dream of it. So, shall we get started?

Mary: Why not?

:Excellent, thank you! So Mary why don’t you tell us about yourself.

Mary: (Shrugs) I’m an Irish girl, I was murdered, resurrected and now I go around killing people. Lot’s of layers to me, yeah?

: Okay… anything else?

Mary: Listen buddy, if what you said really is true, and I don’t believe you for a second, but if it is, wouldn’t that amount to a little something called a spoiler?

: I stand corrected. All right then let’s focus on your job, what kind of people do you kill?

Mary: All kinds of people. I specialize in the evil. You know; the murderers, the rapists, the thieves, the liars, the adulterers, and the betrayers.

: I see… so what drives you to do such a thing?

Mary: Someone has to.

: What about the law?

Mary: What about it?

: Well… don’t these people deserve due process? Shouldn’t they be allowed to exercise their rights? What about the law of the land?

Mary: It really is all that simple to you people, yeah? Is that really justice, or is it a futile process that leaves the victims even more scarred and the bad guys with three square meals a day and most likely back on the streets within a few years? Think about it. You catch one of these bad guys and bring them to justice… what then? The laws of man are flawed and usually based off of ancient mythology and misguided values, or the whims of a select few who are typically detached from every day society. Consider what would have happened if the prosecutor wasn’t competent, or if the evidence were to be tampered with. What if witnesses were not reliable or the judge had a political agenda? What then?

: Well those things happen, but I can’t believe that it’s as common as you seem to think. I mean what about the notion that only God can judge?

Mary: You’re pretty naive, yeah? It’s nice to see that there are still some true believers in the world, but reality just doesn’t weigh that out. It happens more than you think. As for God… he had his chance, now it’s my turn?

: What about the idea that someone could forgiven? You’re killing these people without giving them a chance to repent and try to make up for what they did. How is that right?

Mary: Watch it, buddy! You take a look a little girl banged up and bruised to the point of being comatose because she said the wrong thing to a drugged up parent, THEN WE’LL TALK!!

: … I apologize. It’s not my place to judge I suppose. So is that all you do, hunt people down and make them pay for their crimes?

Mary: No that’s not all. I own a muscle car that I thoroughly enjoy driving around in. I also like a quiet night with a bottle of absinthe.

: Absinthe, huh? That’s pretty strong stuff.

Mary: Best in the business. I’ve still got a few bottles from my time in England.

: I thought you were Irish?

Mary: I am, but I moved to England for a while.

: How long did you stay there?

Mary: I’d rather not talk about my time in England, if you don’t mind. It’s… painful.

: Fair enough, so I understand you’re part of a team that goes out and seeks vengeance. Apparently each of you has different powers. What are yours?

Mary: Our powers are linked to the way we… well let’s just say that I’m the team assassin. I’m able to hide in the shadows, move super fast, and take out the bad guys with precision.

: Oh? what’s your weapon of choice?

Mary: I carry a small revolver on me at all times, but I never use it. I’m a blade girl. kodachis, daggers, machetes… pretty much anything sharp.

: I see. So anything else you’d like to tell us? Do you have any friends or family?

Mary: My team are my friends. That’s all.

: I see… well this is turning out to be quite an interesting interview. Unfortunately, we’re out of time. So thank you very much for taking the time to talk to us.

Mary: Eh… whatever.

: See you all next time!
