Hated Character!

Hi Jim,

You speak a lot about characters that you love, can you comment on how you write characters you hate?

Thanks,
Linden

Hi Linden,

Base them on someone you don’t like.

Yeah, that’s pretty much all I can say about that. Do you need to write a character that you want to be thoroughly dispised? Take someone you don’t like, someone you don’t get along with, and/or someone who just really rubs you the wrong way. Look at why you don’t like this person or can’t get along with them. It’s very rare that we find a person that we dispise literally everything about… though it does happen… So take the qualities of that person that you really can’t stand and incorperate them into you character.

One word of caution though, don’t take specific examples like… well exact manuerisms or quotes. Come up with something on your own there. Just try to adopt the way they deal with people and situations. Try to picture how that person would behave in the scenario that you’re writing about and make the character act that way.

That’s really all there is to it from my perspective.

I’ll open it up and see if my readers have any ideas of their own. Leave a comment and let me know!

This is funny yet true. Good characters and characters who I might not intend to be viewed in one way or the other often derive certain elements from people I know/have interacted with. After all, this is how you and I and everybody understands humans and how they act: via life!
As for characters we hate, I think your advice is solid. In order to channel negativity through the page, using somebody you can relate negatively through can work wonders for turning on the passion tap. Great post!

Just pay attention to life. This election season has given us so much fodder for hateful, spiteful, ugly characters……..But I know you just ranted on this and I am sure you did not want to repeat yourself; so I said it for you.

  3. This year, the antagonist in my Nano is the most hateful of people. I’d leave him out entirely, but then what would the Garden be without the serpent. I just fear that any reader will freak out and declare me an antisemetic which I am NOT, without reading the whole story, so I doubt I’ll share much of him.
